Complaint filed several time, yet no response!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Unfortunely, my mentees' career coordinators failed them after graduating from Earl C. Clements Job corps 2017.

I have made several attempts contacting an DOL agent about my mentees experience to Job Corps Center 1-800 number. One attempt calling the center leaving a voicemail at 270-389-****. No response, the number given by the representative. Yet!

Still no call from Dept of Labor or center, I must say it's been a total of 3 months. Job corps is a place to provide education, development, enpowerment and growth, how do you expect a youth to be empowered when you drop the ball on them. A coordinator can dictate anything on paper of a youth progress, but the proof when your mentee feels his or her time was wasted attending the program. Years ago, career coordinates cared about your progress after job corps..they made sure you your tools were provided on depart( unfortunately my mentee did not receive his)...

Sadly, both mentees are definitely not working in the field. Mentor concerned Tranette Engram

This place is a joke

To bad the staff is not there to really help solve any issues that may arise with students in a way that is condusive to learning as well as making sure all student feel safe. they are terminating students that should be there while fostering an environment of bullying.

if you want your child to be bullied angry, disrespectful and mean than this is the place for him/her. My thoughts are this, New Haven Jobs corps is a joke. My child was one with special needs and instead of the staff helping and being understanding., they blamed and did fake investigations. They allowed my child to be threatened and bullied to the point where he no longer felt safe on the campus.

I hope it gets closed down. they are terminating more students than they are helping. If your child or young adult is using drugs, being permisscous, bulling others, then this is the prefect free Jail for them.

we absolutely hated this bombed experience. they sell a good game on the tours but it nothing like it inside.

The Professionalism of the Staff is Questionable

Spoke with my daughter's counselor about a cell phone theft and the fact that someone had tapped into my account. The phone provider reported the incident as identity theft.

The counselor clapped back at me and said: "well she is going to be coming right back to your home if she continues to go to wellness". I told him that she sometimes has sometimes she gets an upset stomach with diarrhea when she is stressed. She has been there approximately 3 weeks.

He told me that is no excuse, because, he has Chron's disease My daughter was given ibuprofen for an upset stomach with diarrhea. I am not a physician but pain relievers do not alleviate gastric intestinal problems

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I volunteered to go to at 16 was a 9th grade drop out and was just going no where in life. I was wanting to quit my first week due to the treatment we received, living in small rooms on bunkbeds where every morning safe flips on all the lights yelling get up and will pull you out og bed if you dont get up.

Then after eating we had to clean the dorm and make our beds. Which btw if you fail to do that 30 degree fold they would throw you entire mattress on the floor and and punish you with a hour of extra cleaning like the toilets. Staff dose anything they want to you, abusing the fact they can point you out which means for some people jail time if they get kicked out so it always put strain on those few. Now that i mentioned the bad stuff now onto the good while i was there i attended their high school program and got my GED at 16 and then a HSD at just 17.

I went into carpentry and computer works, learning skills that i still use to this day i went for two years straight. I came in at 230+ pounds of fat and left 189 solid muscle.

I made many close friends that im still in contact till this day been 10 years now. Its not for everyone but if you come in with the right mind set and stay focus you will leave with skills to set your left on the right course i now own two business and on my third house and i owe it to them giving me the hard life lessons i really needed

The Delaware Valley New York site was unprofessional. The staff was leaving left and right. their so-called fitness center was something out of the 1970s and the Wi-Fi non-existent except for one area of the campus and that was the cafeteria. The education that was promised was not given and they do not have internships for a lot of the trades; waste of time. They do not address their emails and they're rude to the clients.

Right.

Get something for free and complain about the service.

Typical welfare recipient types.

But you can afford your electronic gizmos because you complained about something that could hardly be more insignificant - WiFi.

Get your delinquent, undereducated child back on track and don't expect the government or the staff in some lousy New York office to do it for you.

Like the 70's ? You mean the decade that gave us Schwarzenegger and Ferigno ?

That equipment worked fine for them. Sympathy level = 0

Thank you ! You think people would appreciate a free education & job training !

My family is from the Bronx - but moved when I was 2 - I am now 48 - people that can't handle their children and send them her COMPLAIN ! The nerve ... *** me off - I grew up poor - hand me down shoes & clothes ( my Mother did the best she could and kept food on the table & a roof per our heads - my father was a good man (most of the time ) but an alcoholic ... I can't believe the bad reviews I seen about the staff - the young *** who's parents can't control them are most likely disrespectful & spoiled !

My nephew is in this program and has learned a great deal because he put his mind to it !

If you're lazy & want things handed to you go to the welfare office & collect my husband & I'd hard earned taxes !!! They should evaluate the students & eliminate the *** sponges who want a free ride !

Why do these kids have to be lazy and disrespectful and spoiled?Maybe they just thought this was an opportunity, and they would not get treated like criminals if they are not indeed, criminals.Maybe they thought this would be a safe environment, free of sexual harrassment and bullying by peers and staff?Maybe they, as young impressionable adults and teens really believed the hype and got there to find they were surrounded by court ordered kids and violent people, that treated this joke like prison.

HELP US

The staff members here at blue ridge job corps in Marion va are horrible! They are ridiculously rude and never apologize for their mistakes but they will be quick to write you up for defending yourself.

& they have unnecessary rules, such as not being able to sleep on top of your comforters when it's their fault that's the air doesn't work at nights . Secondly, we have to be off the dorms floors by 7:45 but they wait until 10:10 at night to call the ladies out for clean up knowing we have to be up early in the morning which most of us don't get done until 11:30 depending on our clean up. Another thing I disagree on is the medical "wellness staff" they should be more aware of students emergencies and not just throw them out the office because it is lunch time. I would also like to say that this place is highly infected it has bats, roaches, spiders, etc I constantly go to the RA's ( residential advisors ) and let them know about my issues they will repeatedly say okay they will fix the problem but it never gets done.

I came to this center to better myself not to be a janitor and clean up after all the other girls In here . It's hard trying to stay focus when nobody really takes your seriously I hate to have to give my career opportunity just because I'm not getting treated right by the staff when corporate come they run around like a chicken with its head cut off to makes thing try to look nice and perfect. Please please please do something about this. If the problem is unsolved soon this center when constantly lose girls that want their education it shouldn't be like this.

One last thing I want to add is I have to go get surgery done on my mouth they will be removing four teeth wellness told me if I had a appointment on Tuesday I would leave the Monday before get a bus ticket back on Tuesday night and have to be in class Wednesday morning. Cmon now that's impossible ! I'm going to be in so much pain and they refuse to put me on medical leave they insist I use my personal days which I believe I shouldn't have too because it's a medical reason I've already had the doctor transfer the paperwork and everything.

This place is really unfair and I because it's like this because the program is free to us girls if we were paying for this out of our pockets it wouldn't be so strict. Please take issue asap please!!!

5s. My overall experience with this facility has been wonderful.

I constantly hear great things from my daughter. The only drawback is there is nowhere for them to cook and she's always hungry lol. The only thing I can send her is junk food and she is use to eating organics.

The staff and teachers have been amazing. Wish it was located in a safer community.

Hello. Does anyone have any reviews for any upstate NY job corps? The Saint Petersburg Fl center is good. However, there are students who are from the rough part of town and it shows. If your child is not mentally strong do not send them here. Saint Pete has a no tolerance policy and from my opinion they stand by it. The problem is most students come in off the streets and they bring that mentality with them. They disrupt the class and make it hard for the students to learn and the teachers to teach. Alot of the facilities are closing down because they do not have a high graduation rate. As far as staff picking on students and giving them a hard time we haven't experienced that as of yet and I hope we never will. If you decide to try the Saint Pete location keep in mind it's labeled as the best but the center is smack dead in the middle of the hood. Literally. There is a lot of racial profiling from residents and police in this area. Speaking from experience.

Job Corps-- A Daycare Center for Incompentent Adults and Juvenile Delinquents

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Let me make something perfectly clear to you: If you come from a middle class background where crime is not prevalent and your average logical thinking citizen can react in reasonable terms as well as use the words "please, thank you, excuse me, etc"...you are going to be in for a serious rude surprise with Job Corps. To understand it in better terms, think of it in this fashion: You know that kid Jayshawn or Marquell back at your middle school who was always getting trouble?

Always getting in fights, always suspended, always on detention for something, always starting trouble when no one was even bothering him, the principal's office was his V.I.P spot, the neighborhood knew him for always getting into something he had no business doing? We all knew someone like that as a kid. Now imagine taking 550 kids just like Jayshawn and Marquelle and putting them all together in one facility. THAT'S JOB CORPS!

It's where the worst of the worst are gathered, the *** of society, the people that everyone else is sick of dealing with and they direct them over there to get them out of their face. 90% of them are no there to improve themselves--they are there for the free room and board and spend the day clowning around and making life impossible for the small percentage of people who are serious about improving themselves. The immaturity of these students (who are as old as 25 years old) defies comprehension, as well as the egregious lack of intelligence. A vast majority of these students have dropped out of school and have a 7th grade level education (they all remarked that I was "smart as ***" and I graduated high school with a 2.4 GPA!!!).

The immaturity-- tripping people, throwing water on you while you're sleeping, putting a used tampon in your things, constantly taunting you non-stop until the situation escalates are just a few of the antics you can expect. Seriously, grown adults pushing people out of their way instead of "Excuse me", cutting in line, pulling fire alarms at 2 am, grabbing food you are eating right out of your hand??? STAFF MEMBERS joining in on bullying and harrassment? Sure go ahead and make complaint with the adminstration, nothing will come of it, unless you are a suck up that they like.

Staying to yourself and not talking to anyone won't work either--people WILL go out of their way to mess with you because they have no other important concern other than just being a govermental leech and a drain on society. Staff is grossly incompetent and underqualified, that goes to include the Center Director himself. (What kind of *** tells a student in front of everyone that if he saying anything rude to anyone else that he'll be terminated, that all students are free to harass him as much as they please, and that he just has to take it?!?) Instructors let the students sleep in class and maintain no discipline whatsoever, residential advisors harass students they don't like and encourage other students to join in on it. Staying to yourself and saying nothing is useless, as people constantly go out of their way to mess with you.

Bullying remains a constant problem in Job Corps, and administration will NOT do anything about it, other than tell you to grow a thicker skin, or "talk it out." I complained constantly about my 3 roommates (all of them much larger than me) bullying me on a daily basis and nothing whatsoever was done--I asked to be moved to another room, they just would not do it. Period. Fights are constant and are over the dumbest reason (or no reason!) I was twice attacked--once because one *** didn't like the way I looked at him, the other because I told him to keep his hands off of me after I'd had enough of him slapping the back of my head. I finally ended up leaving the program early deciding it just wasn't worth it (they gave me a certificate anyway).

The biggest laugh in the end came when I discovered the certificate after a student completes is useless because employers know the kind of trash that Job Corps harbors, and they'll have no part of it. Even now 10 years later, I am contacted by other former students--none of them have done anything worthwhile since they left. They work at Krogers or Target and have 4, 5 kids. If you know what's best for you, go to college or some reputable vocational program.

STAY AWAY FROM JOB CORPS! I've been there, the fights and non stop drama is *** on earth!

Job Corps - Review in Employment Agencies category

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I see so many reports on how badly staff is treated at job corps centers. I would love to see a report and review on how students are treated as well.

My son has been in Windriver Job Corps since November 2015. He is a good Christian kids who was raised to respect other and do right. All the staff I have ran into and spoken too have told both me and my husband what a good kid he was and they liked him being part of the team. However, some of the hire up staff who get to make the rules go to far.

They choose their favorites and make everyone else's life miserable in the process. My son was doing great, he was vice president of his dorm, he was moved to a different dorm for good bahavior, he is respected by the staff he works with and the other students and has made many friends on the way. Just recently he got on some ladies bad side who was recently promoted and is now making his life a living ***. He had a friend who he like to hang out with and he got in trouble for hugging.

What the heck???? It is not making out just hugging in public. Then he was threatened he would be written up if he was seen hugging, touching, or smiling at anyone. He was then told he could no longer see his friend and they are all devastated.

Another insistent was one one was allowed to go off campus for a weekend pass and the passes had to be requested on Sunday the week before and no later. This rule was implemented just a few days ago with no earring to any of the students. One time they made the students pay Job Crops back from going home on Christmas which Job Crps was supposed to pay for the plane tickets for all the students. So when the students returned to job corps their weekly pay of $25 was withheld until the plane tickets were paid back in full.

This left the students mindless and not able to buy personal hygiene products or have a weekend pass or to purchase necessities needed. There was also another incidence where some students got hurt. One slipt on ice, one fell and hurt his leg, etc. And job corps so call health and wellness is supposed to pay for medial treatment etc and nothing was done.

They would not even take the students off campus to get them checked out by doctors. I think this program could be an awesome program for those who need it if it was able to run correctly and take the kids best interest at heart. Being a preschool teacher, director for at risk teens and working with kids on the streets and in the foster care system. I have seen alot.

If you show these kids respect, someone cares about them and how they can trust you These centers would be a great place to help the youth with the proper training for all staff members. These centers do not need jail wardens or people with an additude they need people who know what their doing, who care and want to make a difference.

Who follow the Job corps handbook that is written for a reason and not just because they want to make up their own rules. I hope someone comes up with a way to support the students and not just the staff because some staff are more of the problem than the students.

I forgot to mention any time you had a concern and called your recruiter like you should they never returned your calls or helped you fix an issue. They are not in it for helping students it is just another pay check to them.

Too Much Authoritarian Control

I was a Student at the Collbran Job Corps center for a year, and I can say that it isn't as bad as many others, but it still had its flaws; the most bothersome of which is the abused power of its staff. First off - after taking a tour of the center, we were given a sheet polling for our opinions of the center so far.

I answered that I did not like the color ranking system, nor did I like the fact that students needed staff signatures in order to advance a rank. nor that I thought the staff could be trusted with personal concerns at first introduction. After turning in my answers, I was called to the office and scolded about how my opinions were wrong, further proving why staff could not be trusted. Second- Everybody is forced to clap when told to do so, or they face punishment.

Really is a silly thing. Every Monday, the center director holds a lecture in the gym. Sometimes to congratulate students on some accomplishments, and other times to throw a hissy-fit if something did not go his way. If you do not clap when everybody else does, the staff observing from a window on the upper floor will call you to one of the many offices and give you a scolding as well as a punishment.

(Some students were known to get kicked out for this as well). The Punishment includes all of the following: ~4-8 hours of extra work on your free day ~Earlier curfews for a maximum of 7 days ~Earlier wake-up times on your free days ~No time on your Personal electronics for a maximum of 7 days ~Kitchen duty ~Added to your permanent record Third - The Hypocrisy is prominent within both staff assigned leaders and the staff themselves. The Center Director always complains about how all students feel entitled to things, which I agree we shouldn't, but yet he feels he is most entitled to respect. I was hugging my Girlfriend at one time and one of the staff has mistakenly thought we were kissing and so both of us received the punishment as mentioned above.

one month later it was discovered the same staff member was having sex with a student. Cell phones were not allowed, so some student leaders would go around snitching on all of those who were unlucky or dumb enough to get caught with one, when the leaders themselves had cell phones they were not willing to turn in. The rules also say that shoes may not be worn in the dorm, but staff don't have to abide by it, even when visiting for extended amounts of time. Fourth - The quality of the food is awful.

It was good for the first few months of me being there, but quality reduced significantly afterwards. Most days it would be under cooked rice, beans or noodles. It makes sense with the low food budget and culinary students making it. It would be better if we were allowed to walk to the gas station down the street to buy our own food, but walking off campus was not allowed for most students.

what you need to do to gain privilege to walk to the gas station goes against my own morals, I will explain how you gain the privilege at the "Eighth" section of this list. Fifth - Everybody was always treated like a delinquent child. It did not matter your history or how often you proved yourself otherwise, Everybody got treated lower than the Center Director's Beloved staff. The Center Director had this saying "Those who need Job Corps the most, appreciate it the least".

After chatting with a couple of peers, I realized that "Those that need Job corps the most appreciate it the most, but get kicked out the fastest". The very delinquents Everybody is treated like are the ones who don't get to experience the chance they needed. Sixth - Everybody is responsible for one another. Although to some this may seem like a fair brotherhood, it really only applied when someone else in the dorm got in trouble.

Example: someone spills ramen noodles on the counter, no one is allowed to eat ramen noodles. Another example is the dorm clean-up. If more than 3 people fail at their assigned dorm cleanup responsibility, Everyone has to re-clean the whole dorm for a whole hour - even the spotless areas. Don't get me wrong, I sincerely believe one is responsible for their own mess.

Seventh - This one is only a bit more relevant to myself: The constant reminder from staff that I signed a contract with them, one that I didn't read. "***" you say. no, here is my reason: while I had started to read it, my mother hovering behind me at the time just said "Just Sign The *** Thing Already!". Due to the pressure of my helicopter parent, I signed without looking at most of the terms of the agreement.

Eighth - The students would always turn on each-other to gain status. I mentioned earlier about the hypocrisy with the students and the phones. I was a leader, but got booted from leadership because I didn't write the students punishments for the most trivial of things. I didn't even know there was a quota I had to meet for how many students I had to write punishments for.

The more one writes someone a punishment, the greater the leadership powers one gains: Write enough students up, You may get recognized for your "Strong Leadership skills" and gain the gold rank as well as the privilege to walk to the gas station down the road. Ninth - You had Little Time to yourself. You wake up at 5:45 in the morning to eat breakfast, return to the dorm for headcount, 7:00 to clean the dorm, go to trade from 8:00am - 4:00pm, then another headcount. 5:00pm - 6:00pm to eat, and the rest of the day is yours until 9:00am where you go through yet another headcount and then to bed to do the same exact thing the next day.

You are expected to not be in the dorm for long. This is especially annoying for me who has his own passions and yet has had little time to pursue them. Tenth - You would only make $35 dollars every other week for allowance, but they even tax you on that, so you would have about $33 dollars to spend. and if you had not been there for 7 months yet, you would only have $24.

they also charge $5 to make the change in your payment. You were not allowed to carry more than $50 dollars on you or you would be prone to punishment upon discovery. There are many other thing wrong with the place, But I must give my compliments on the recreation, complete with pool tables, a gym, a weight-room, and a computer lab. The vocational training wasn't bad at all actually felt like work would.

The walk to vocational areas wouldn't be so bad if it didn't smell like raw sewage(Place was built on top of an old sewage plant).

I would only recommend Job Corps to someone who was really struggling. But even before then I would suggest trying to apply for a job during the holidays, as that is when most companies start hiring.

Theory vs Reality

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Job Corps started out as a good idea. However in reality the theory was deficient.

Taking at risk youth and jamming them together in one location can be risky at best. In my experience visiting Job Corps Centers in various parts of the Country, I am convinced that the USDOL/ETA has approached the problem of disadvantaged youth in a backwards manner. If Job Corps wants better programs than it needs to take the resources being spent on expanding and building new Centers into fixing up the ones currently in operation or replace them. Centers in facilities over 50 years in age should be closed and replaced.

Do not waste the taxpayers money to patch up places that are falling apart. Obtaining Federal funding to make even emergency safety repairs can take years. We all know from our urban experiences that as facilities age they break down. If they are not maintained at pristine levels the residents may help to break then down even further.

That is what is happening to countless existing Centers now. Some Centers were constructed on swamps and are sinking, some are in buildings with mold/asbestos, leaking roofs, no heat or A/C, and these are located in States that need heat and/or AC. Center operators cannot get the funds necessary to make the repairs if they wanted to do that because the USDOL process is too slow. It is actually easier to get funding to build an additional new Center than to get the funding to repair existing older ones.

During this current Job Corps press for Zero Tolerance, maybe the USDOL/ETA and the Obama administration along with Director Jacobs-Simmons should take a serious look at down sizing the program as a whole, close ALL Centers age 50 or higher, and relocate the students to the newly constructed Centers. Better facilities, better creative opportunities, better chances for higher quality education. If I live in a mansion I may act like I belong there. If I live in a slum I will act like I belong there.

For the billions being spent now, we are not getting a good return on our money. Keep the current training budget for the 120+ Centers and cut the total centers by 50%. Then upgrade everything that remains and see what that does. In the early days of Job Corps the plan was to take youth away from their home areas to train, new location away from their past, new opportunities for a new future.

Now Job Corps tries to accommodate everyone by having a Center in their own back yard. Close to home, close to the past and close to the associated problems of the home town.

The reality is that the theory has not work well for at least 20-40% of Job Corps attendees. If the trainees in Job Corps have failed in public school, what makes anyone think that another public school type program will succeed for them. Job Corps has become a very expensive childcare program where education and training is touted but the reality is that trainees are bribed by incentives to stay in the program.

It is preached in Job Corps "do the right thing because it is the right thing to do" but that is not the case for 20-40% of trainees. The trainees of today need a new educational approach, a focus on individualized education with modern equipment, methods, environment and facilities. The taxpayer is tired of funding governmental programs that do not work. Job Corps has tried but it is failing.

The answer is not to scrap it totally BUT rather to scale down, relocate to newer better, educationally designed facilities and take the funding for the 120+ existing centers and develop a maximum of 50 (state of the art) training facilities of no more that 300 trainees, pay the staff well and maintain the stuffing out of the facilities at all times. It is a paradox that the US government will spend millions to redecorate even one Federal courtroom, but will NOT spend millions to remodel/repair Job Corps Centers that are working to help keep young people out of the Federal courtrooms.

Job Corps has become a cash cow for some Federal agencies and private contractors. It is time for real change.
